In 2019, few of us knew the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic would change the world we live in.

At home, over 200,000 Americans -disproportionately Black and Brown- have died from the virus, wearing a mask has become political, economic insecurity is widespread, and “normal” life seems like a lifetime ago.

Around the world, COVID-19 has put millions of women and girls at risk for gender-based violence, unwanted pregnancy, and poverty.

This is the environment in which Friends of UNFPA’s 2019 Annual Report is published. Even though global health has drastically changed in light of the pandemic, the progress UNFPA made in 2019 should be celebrated and built upon.

Last year, for example, UNFPA trained 21,000 midwives. These health professionals now work to ensure that women have access to lifesaving care. Every woman has a right to prenatal care, safe delivery care, and family planning, even insecure healthcare systems.

Without UNFPA’s ongoing commitment to women and girls, the pandemic would have put millions more at even greater risk. You can read more about UNFPA and Friends of UNFPA’s work prior to the coronavirus pandemic in the 2019 Annual Report.

You’ll also find the stories of Keflene, Aisha, Arek, and Khadija. UNFPA empowered these women to reach their full potentials by meeting their reproductive health needs. Finally, you’ll see how Friends of UNFPA and UNFPA use your donations to provide care to women and girls.
