Chairwoman, State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee

Congresswoman Nita Lowey is one of the strongest and most outspoken legislators working to secure this country’s moral, financial and political support for UNFPA.

Currently serving her eleventh term in Congress, representing parts of Westchester and Rockland Counties in New York, the Congresswoman serves as a member of the House Appropriations Committee and as Chairwoman of the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee. She has fought consistently for the release of funds to UNFPA and advocated significant increases in the U.S. contribution to UNFPA and international family planning.

Congresswoman Lowey has distinguished herself as an effective legislator and leading proponent of educational opportunity, health care quality, international diplomacy, environmental protection and women’s health and rights.

She authored a bill to ensure that women in managed care health plans have direct access to their ob-gyns. As the former Chair of the Congressional Women’s Caucus and the House Pro- Choice Caucus, the Congresswoman authored and passed legislation demanding that insurance companies cover prescription contraceptives for federal employees.

Congresswoman Lowey is a leader in the fight against domestic violence, having secured record increases in federal funding for battered women’s shelters. She is also a longtime champion of human rights and of enhancing the role of women in development.
