Americans for UNFPA 2010 International Honoree Featured on
NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams

Thank you to NBC Nightly News for highlighting the outstanding work of Feeza Shraim, 2010 Americans for UNFPA Honoree for the Health and Dignity of Women.

Tune in now to hear how Ms. Shraim, a midwife, works in her community to ensure that no woman dies giving life.

With support from UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, Ms. Shraim leads a major effort in the Gaza Strip to provide safe, immediate care to mothers, especially when roads are closed and hospitals are unreachable. UNFPA sought Ms. Shraim out as a valuable partner in 2004. She has since conducted needs assessment of obstetric and maternity wards in Gaza hospitals and delivered training on emergency obstetric care. She intends to establish a maternity home to serve the marginalized areas.

As head of Nursing at Al-Shifa Hospital, Ms. Shraim trains midwives and other medical professionals to improve maternal health services by anticipating obstacles. As a midwife working independently, she makes house calls day and night.

Americans for UNFPA will present an award, this October, to Ms. Shraim for her work to drastically improve the circumstances in which women deliver their children—by her own presence and her ability to coordinate effective action on their behalf .

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, provides women's health care and promotes the rights of women around the world. Americans for UNFPA is dedicated to building American support for the work of UNFPA and to restoring the United States' moral, political and financial contribution to the organization.
